The Southern Methodist University Mustangs men's basketball team ended the 2023-24 regular season with an overall record of 20-13, including 7-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.[1]
SMU lost its ACC tournament opener to Boston College 80-75 on March 12, 2024.[1]
Bracketologists projected SMU among the last teams out of the NCAA Division I men's tournament field ahead of Selection Sunday on March 17, 2024. ESPN's Joe Lunardi listed the Mustangs as one of the first four teams out in his final bracketology update.[2]
The NCAA selection committee, chaired by Charles McClelland, evaluates bubble teams based on metrics including NET rankings, quality wins, conference performance, and recent form. Player injuries and returns to full strength factor into assessments of team potential.[3][4]
SMU was not selected for the 68-team field or the NIT. Head coach Rob Lanier was dismissed on March 22, 2024, and replaced by Andy Enfield on April 1, 2024.[5]
The Mustangs open the 2024-25 season under Enfield on November 4, 2024, against Tarleton State.[5]
